Wild Bill Hickock is shot in the back while playing cards, so nobody much notices the tragedy of the small family massacred in the hills outside town. Nobody except Melvin. He sees the whole thing unfold in bloody reality. What follows is a year upon year of trekking across the West, as Melvin struggles to survive and prosper.
