(2007) Format: Softcover Buy this from: amazon.com | amazon.co.uk Puzzled by the problem of the last indomitable Gaulish village, the Romans send a spy to learn the secret of their enormous strength. That done, they capture the Druid Getafix and try to torture the secret of the magic potion out of him. Asterix wonders why Getafix has been gone for so long, and gets captured too. The head of the Roman garrison, Crismus Bonus, wants the potion so he can go to Rome and become Caesar. To have a little fun, Getafix brews up a batch of magic hair-growing potion and the Romans all drink it. After they've run out of hair jokes, Getafix relents and brews an antidote, and also a little cauldron of the strength potion so that he and Asterix can make their escape. Before they can leave, however, Julius Caesar himself turns up and wants to know what's going on. Asterix tells him about Crismus Bonus's plan to become Caesar, and Julius finds that very interesting. He releases Asterix and Getafix without seeing how the potion works. Asterix and Julius promise to meet again.

Once they get to the city, Metallurgix can't be found and they are arrested by Romans. While in captivity they learn that a gang of sickle-traffickers has had a monopoly since Metallurgix disappeared. The pair decide that Metallurgix has been kidnapped by the gang, set out to look for him, and get arrested again. A clue from a fellow prisoner leads them to leave the jail again and go to the Bois de Boulogne, where they find an underground chamber full of golden sickles, and beat up the gang. They still haven't found Metallurgix, and don't know who the big boss of the gang is. More searching, and they get arrested again. This time they discover that the Roman Prefect is the boss of the gang, and the Metallurgix is being held in the same building as they are. They free Metallurgix, get a free sickle, and return home.

Getafix wins the new tricks competition and is named Druid of the Year. Goths who have sneaked over from Germania then kidnap Getafix and take him home. They try to get some secrets of military value out of Getafix, but are not successful. Coming to the rescue, Asterix and Obelix end up imprisoned and scheduled for execution along with Getafix and Rhetoric, their wimpy Gothic-Gaulish interpreter. As a last request they ask for ingredients to make a Gaulish soup, which is of course the magic potion. Since their concern is not only to escape, but also to neutralize Germania for centuries to come, they feed the soup to Rhetoric. Rhetoric declares himself chief. Then the Gauls give swigs of potion to a whole succession of henpecked or otherwise dissatisfied Gothic men, who all raise armies and declare themselves supreme chiefs. That mischief done, our friends return to their village in Gaul for a victory feast.

(2008) Format: Softcover Buy this from: amazon.com | amazon.co.uk The Prefect of Gaul, Odius Asparagus, takes Cacofonix the bard to Rome as a present to Caesar. Caesar says to throw him to the lions in the next games. Asterix and Obelix hitch a ride with Phoenecian traders to Rome to rescue Cacafonix. Once in Rome they sign up for gladiator training in order to get close to where Cacofonix is being held. During the "training" they promise to free the other gladiators, and also teach them some new non-violent games. On the day of the circus, Cacofonix is thrown to the lions as advertised, but he sings to them and empties the arena of both lions and spectators. Order restored, the gladiators come on, throw down their weapons, and start playing parlor games, which enrages Caesar. Asterix tells Caesar that if he wants to see real fighting he should send in some legionnaires. Caesar sends in a cohort, and Asterix and Obelix make short work of them. This pleases the crowd, which was all Caesar wanted to do, so the Gauls leave for home in peace.

The idea is to isolate them so their spirit won't infect the rest of Gaul. The stockade isn't taken very seriously by the Gauls, and Asterix himself makes a wager with the Roman. He bets that he can travel all around Gaul, collecting the best foods from each area, and return to invite the Roman to a banquet featuring everything he's gathered. The deed is done, making the album a comic travelogue of Roman-era France. A little dog joins Asterix and Obelix in Paris (on page 12), follows them faithfully, and isn't noticed until the last page.

Asterix and Obelix enlist in the Roman army in order to find and return Tragicomix to Panacea. Though the Roman military trainers find the task difficult, the Gauls eventually bring the training, and especially the cooking, up to Gaulish standards. Additional comedy is provided by an Egyptian tourist who enlists accidentally and speaks only in hieroglyphics. Once in North Africa, our heroes find that Tragicomix has been taken prisoner by Scipio's army (it's Romans against Romans). Effecting a rescue, and at the same time a victory for Casear, they go home with Caesar's blessing. They try teaching tricks to Dogmatix, fighting as gladiators, acting, and betting at the races. Finally they try a bank robbery, but the tax collectors have already taken all the money. On the way home they run into a tax collector, who has just enough money to fill the cauldron. In fact, it's the same money because it smells like soup. Nobody really remembers how to fish, but Asterix and Obelix decide to try. They set out in an old boat during a storm, and are soon lost. The next morning there's no sign of land, but a pirate ship comes by and they raid it for food. Another storm blows them west, and their boat sinks. Asterix and Obelix swim to land, guessing successively that they might be in Gaul, Thrace, Crete, and Iberia. They interact with Indians and go hunting, and the Chief wants Obelix to marry his daughter. This makes it necessary to flee, and some lost Vikings come along just in time. The Vikings take Asterix and Obelix home as prisoners to prove they've been to a New World, but when they get back nobody believes them because the prisoners are Gauls. With other Gaulish prisoners, Asterix and Obelix escape from the Vikings and return to Gaul, without ever figuring out where they've been.
